Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems are indicated where galvanic anodes cannot economically deliver sufficient current to protect the target structure against corrosion, usually in cases of larger structures, or where electrolyte resistivity is high. ICCP systems consist of long life anodes connected to a transformer- rectifier powered by commercial AC power mains, where available. Otherwise, solar power panels may be used, which provide direct current. However, the uncontrolled voltage and current of solar panels must be transformed to a controlled voltage and current for proper structure protection. The voltage control device is typically called a solar cathodic protection rectifier.
